During an exclusive interview with Radio.com, Muse frontman Matt Bellamy pondered conservative political talk show host Glenn Beck’s open letter to the British band’s singer last October after the band was critical of American right-wingers during an interview with UK media outlet The Observer.
“As uncomfortable as it might be for you, I will still play your songs loudly,” Beck explained to Bellamy in the letter, which he posted to his official website. “To me your songs are anthems that beg for choruses of unity and pose the fundamental question facing the world today – can man rule himself?”
“I suppose it’s nice that he’s a fan of the music, but I don’t want people to start using our music for strange, obscure political movements,” Bellamy told Radio.com about the band’s unlikely high-profile fan. “Not unless it was something I was really behind.
“I’m not that familiar (with Beck) to get behind something that…sort of right-wing or left-field or whatever it is that he’s doing,” the Muse frontman continued, admitting that he’s much more comfortable discussing British politics. “I don’t quite know what it is. Some sort of bizarre, what do you call it, Tea Party stuff or something like that? It sounds like someone is dropping off tea bags into the ocean in Boston or something,” he continued, chuckling.
“I’m a bit of a libertarian at heart, but I’d say I’m more of a left-leaning Libertarian,” Bellamy concurred.
“Not so much a raging right-wing Libertarian, which I think is a different breed. I’m a big fan of the Constitution,” he added, causing him and Muse drummer Dominic Howard to both laugh. “I don’t know what I’m saying here.”
Muse is nominated for Best Rock Song (“Madness”) and Best Rock Album (The 2nd Law) at the 55th Annual GRAMMY Awards on February 10, 8 p.m. ET/PT.
