It’s a good thing Dirty Projectors went ahead and released their newest full-length album, Swing Lo Magellan, because we’ve been listening to their single “Gun Has No Trigger” way too much lately. And somehow it hasn’t gotten annoying yet. Probably because the Dirty Projectors have nearly perfected their alternative-indie rock vibe which was so welcomed on 2009′s Bitte Orca, which received attention from notables across multiple genres (including a Solange Knowles cover).

If you’re wondering (I know I was), the answer is that no, Angel Deradoorian isn’t back for more heavenly collaboration. But you shouldn’t let that deter you, because Swing Lo Magellan has something for every type of fan. The opening track “Offspring Are Blank” draws you in with a sparse intro of beautifully harmonizing voices over minimal percussion, but when it takes off, it really takes off. The album trots off at a steady pace, with the aforementioned “Gun Has No Trigger” in the third slot. In the middle of the album lies a treat in “Dance For You.” It’s a level sweeter than the rest, accompanied by simple, clap-along instrumentals.

Swing Lo Magellan shows a lot of maturity in the Dirty Projectors. They effectively proved that they have the chops to follow up their previous success. Masterful, honest songwriting coupled with the irresistible catchiness of indie-pop makes for a welcome addition into the cache of summer 2012 albums.
